Meet the Director-Steve Wilcox
We've met with Smart Money Cymru's Company Secretary-Steve Wilcox to hear more about what drove him to become a volunteer.
How long have you been volunteering as a Director of Smart Money Cymru Community Bank?
I became a Director in 2006 after working with Smart Money in my role as Credit Union Officer with Caerphilly County Borough Council between 2004 and 2005.
So what is your role as a Director of SMC?
Company Secretary
Why do you volunteer in the Credit Union sector?
After working with the (then) three Credit Unions in Caerphilly County Borough between 2004 and 2005, I became aware of the fantastic work and important role that Credit Unions play in the community. As Caerphilly & District Credit Union (as it was then) was looking for additional Board members, I took the opportunity to get involved.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I was born and raised in the County Borough and continue to live there now with my wife and dog. After graduating Cardiff University with a Law degree in 2004, I was considering career options when I noticed the Credit Union Officer role with the Council that really interested me and this led to me getting involved with the Credit Union sector. I enjoy taking my dog on varied walks at the weekend and exploring Wales’s beautiful scenery.
Briefly describe your career/experience outside of SMC
I’ve worked in Local Government for over 20 years, primarily in regeneration and economic development. I am currently Development Manager working on Caerphilly Council’s new-build housing programme.
What’s your proudest moment, favourite memory or greatest achievement at SMC so far?
Seeing Smart Money grow from the relatively small, local Credit Union to the large organisation it is now has filled me with pride for the dedicated staff & volunteers who enabled this to happen.
Tell me about your ambitions for the rest of your time at SMC
I’d just like to continue to support the organisation on its ambitious journey.
Thanks for chatting with us Steve! Poppy looks adorable.
