Meet the newest member of our Board of Directors - Jeff Cuthbert
Smart Money Cymru Community Bank is delighted to welcome Jeff Cuthbert as the newest member of our Board of Directors. Jeff has been connected to the credit union movement for more than two decades, and states “I'm very keen to help spread the message of credit unions and particularly to assist those suffering most under the cost-of-living crisis.”
Jeff first joined the Caerphilly and District Credit Union (now Smart Money Cymru Community Bank) in 2003, shortly after being elected as the National Assembly Member for the Caerphilly Constituency. He went on to serve as an AM until 2016, including periods as both a Deputy Minister and a Minister in the Welsh Government. Reflecting on his years in public life, Jeff notes that these roles allowed him to work closely with very senior police officers at a Gwent, Wales, and UK level; an experience that has shaped his approach to leadership and governance.
After leaving The Senedd in 2016, Jeff was elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent; a position he held for two terms until 2024. Since retiring from full‑time employment, he has remained deeply committed to community work. He volunteers with the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations, as well as being involved with the Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community since 2004.He is now serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees, a testament to his enduring commitment to community-led initiatives.
Speaking about Jeff’s appointment, Alun Taylor, Chair of the Board said:
“Jeff’s long history in public service, alongside his commitment to financial inclusion, makes him an invaluable addition to Smart Money Cymru Community Bank. His belief in the importance of ethical, community‑based financial support aligns perfectly with the organisation’s mission. We are excited to welcome him to the Board and look forward to the insight, experience and compassion he will bring to our work.”
Welcome to the Smart Money Cymru Community Bank team, Jeff!
