Autumn Money-Saving Tips from Smart Money Cymru

With autumn on the horizon, now's the perfect time to take a fresh look at your finances and find new ways to save. With Christmas soon to be here too, why not start some new habits that could keep more money in your pocket? Here are five simple and effective ways to save money this up and coming autumn, straight from Smart Money Cymru Community Bank.

1. Use Your Slow Cooker or Air Fryer for Easy, Budget-Friendly Meals
Autumn is perfect for warm, comforting meals, and your slow cooker or air fryer if you have one, can help you save both time and money. By preparing meals in bulk, you can make the most of inexpensive ingredients and enjoy leftovers throughout the week. Not only does this cut down on food costs, but it also helps you avoid the temptation of takeaways. Plus, both slow cookers and air fryers are energy-efficient, so you can save on your utility bills whilst enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal.

2. Keep Warm Without Cranking Up the Heat
As the weather gets colder, it’s easy to rely on your central heating, but this can quickly increase your energy bills. Instead, try these cost-effective ways to stay warm:

  • Layer Up: Wear your favourite cosy jumpers, scarves, and socks to stay snug without turning up the thermostat.
  • Enjoy Warm Drinks: Sip on hot tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to keep warm and add a little comfort to your day.
  • Block Out Draughts: Use draught excluders under doors and around windows to keep the cold air out.
  • Let the Sun In: Open your curtains during the day to let in natural sunlight, which can help warm up your home for free!

These simple tricks can help you stay cosy without spending extra on heating.

3. Get Your Home Ready for Winter
Preparing your home for the colder months can save you a lot on energy bills. Start by sealing any gaps or cracks around windows and doors to prevent heat from escaping. It’s also a good idea to have your heating system checked to ensure it’s running efficiently. Lowering your thermostat slightly and adding insulation to your home can make a big difference in keeping your house warm and reducing your energy costs.

4. Make Extra Money with Online Surveys
Autumn is a great time to earn a little extra money from the comfort of your home. Participating in online surveys can provide a bit of supplementary income, especially as we approach Christmas. To get started, find reputable survey sites, set aside some time each day to complete surveys, and be honest with your responses. Whilst you won’t make a fortune, the extra cash can help boost your savings during the colder months  or for Christmas.

5. Try a Spending Freeze
A spending freeze can be a great way to reset your finances and focus on saving. By committing to avoiding non-essential purchases for a set period, you can cut back on unnecessary spending and put more money aside. Plan out your essential expenses, like bills and food, and avoid dining out or impulse buys. During this time, look for free or low-cost activities to enjoy, such as visiting local parks or community events. Tracking your progress and reflecting on your achievements at the end can help you make more mindful spending decisions in the future!

Try embracing these simple strategies to make the most of your money this autumn. By being intentional with your spending and finding creative ways to save, you can enjoy the season without straining your budget! Do you have any other great tips for saving money this autumn? We’d love to hear them!
